Is a CE marking mandatory?
Yes, a CE marking (also referred to as a CE quality mark or CE certificate) is mandatory. However, a CE marking is only mandatory when it applies to a product or product group for which CE harmonisation legislation has been laid down.
A CE certificate, therefore, is not mandatory for products falling outside the scope of the CE harmonisation legislation. This does not mean that these products are not subject to any European legislation. These products, e.g., must often comply with the General Product Safety Directive. When a product is not subject to any European legislation, there will often be national provisions in the country where the product will be placed on the market.
Please find here a list of the products that are required to bear a CE marking.
